CX in Different Debate Formats

Cross-examination exists in nearly every competitive debate format, but the rules, timing, and strategic function vary significantly. A technique that dominates in Policy CX might backfire in Public Forum crossfire. Understanding these differences is essential if you compete across formats or want to deepen your skills in any single one.

The core principles remain constant: ask questions that advance your case, expose weaknesses, and create material for your speeches. But how you apply those principles depends on who is asking, how much time you have, and what the judge expects.

Format-by-Format Breakdown

Policy (CX). Three minutes of CX after each constructive speech. One person from each team questions the other. CX in Policy is fast, technical, and often used to clarify plan mechanics, expose evidence quality issues, or set up disadvantages and counterplans. Flowing is essential because you will reference CX admissions in later speeches.

Lincoln-Douglas (LD). Three minutes of CX after each constructive. Since LD is one-on-one, you question the same person you just heard speak. CX here tends to focus on philosophical frameworks and value-level clashes rather than plan specifics. The challenge is transitioning from abstract value questions to concrete implications.

Public Forum (PF). Uses 'crossfire' rather than traditional CX. First crossfire is between the first speakers (3 minutes), second between the second speakers (3 minutes), and grand crossfire involves all four debaters (3 minutes). PF crossfire is more conversational and less one-directional. Both sides ask questions, so you must be ready to answer as much as you ask.

British Parliamentary (BP). Uses Points of Information (POIs) instead of a dedicated CX period. You stand and offer a 15-second intervention during an opponent's speech. The speaker can accept or decline. This makes CX-style questioning opportunistic rather than structured. Timing and brevity are critical.

Beyond Traditional Debate: MUN and Mock Trial

In Model United Nations, questioning happens during moderated caucuses and the question-and-answer period after speeches. There is no formal CX, but the skill of asking incisive questions to challenge other delegates' positions is identical. The diplomatic framing required in MUN makes it an excellent training ground for CX discipline: you must be sharp without being confrontational.

Mock trial has the most structured cross-examination of any competitive format. Attorneys cross-examine witnesses with strict rules about leading questions, scope, and objections.
