Not all committees are created equal, and the committee you choose shapes your entire conference experience. Strategic committee selection is one of the most overlooked advantages in MUN.

The Committee Landscape

Large GA committees (60-150 delegates): High competition for speaking time, awards go to delegates who lead blocs and merge working papers. Favors outgoing, coalition-building types.

Mid-size specialized committees (20-40 delegates): More speaking opportunities, deeper topic expertise matters. Favors well-researched delegates who can speak substantively.

Small crisis committees (10-20 delegates): Fast-paced, individual powers, creative problem-solving. Favors quick thinkers and bold strategists.

Security Council simulations (15 delegates): Intense negotiation, veto dynamics, every word matters. Favors experienced negotiators who understand power dynamics.

How to Choose

Ask yourself three questions:

1. What's my strength? If you're a strong researcher but a quiet speaker, mid-size specialized committees reward your depth. If you're a natural leader who thrives in chaos, crisis committees are your arena.

2. What's the competition? At prestigious conferences, GA committees attract the most experienced delegates. You may have better award odds in a less popular specialized committee where your preparation stands out more.

3. What am I building? If you want to develop a specific skill — say, crisis management or Security Council negotiation — choose the committee that stretches you, even if it's not your strongest format.

The meta-strategy: at your home conference, pick a committee that stretches you. At travel conferences where awards matter for your team, pick the format where you're strongest.

3. What counter-arguments would the strongest opposition raise? Anticipating opposition is the single highest-leverage skill in competitive activities. The best delegates and debaters prepare for the strongest version of opposing arguments, not the weakest.

Building Your Resource Library

Develop a personal library of go-to sources for the concepts and issues that matter most for your work. For most MUN and debate competitors, the core library includes:

• Primary documents: UN resolutions, treaty texts, government statements relevant to your committee or topic.
• Quality secondary sources: think-tank reports (CFR, Brookings, CSIS, Chatham House), peer-reviewed journal articles, recognized news outlets.
• Historical context: foundational books and articles on your topic area.
• Recent developments: news in the last 90 days that affects your position.

Why Sustained Practice Matters

The difference between bronze-level and gold-level performance in MUN and debate is not raw intelligence — it is hours of structured practice. Recognized champions typically practice 5-10 hours per week between competitions, not the night before. Build sustainable practice habits, and your performance will improve cumulatively across seasons.
