Bot Detection

How to identify automated accounts, bot networks, and coordinated inauthentic behavior on social media platforms.

The Bot Ecosystem

Social media bots are automated accounts that mimic human behavior to amplify messages, manufacture consensus, and manipulate public discourse. Estimates suggest that 5-15% of accounts on major platforms are bots or semi-automated. During the 2016 US election, researchers at Oxford identified over 400,000 bots generating roughly 20% of the political conversation on Twitter.

Not all bots are malicious — many serve legitimate functions like customer service, weather alerts, or news aggregation. The dangerous ones are those designed to look human and to manipulate perception: creating the illusion that an idea is more popular than it is, drowning out legitimate discourse with noise, or harassing individuals into silence.
