Building Trust Infrastructure
Several complementary approaches are being developed to maintain trust in media:
Content provenance (C2PA): Cryptographic signatures embedded at the point of capture or creation, creating an unbroken chain showing where content came from and how it was modified. Major camera manufacturers and tech platforms are adopting C2PA.
Watermarking: Invisible signals embedded in AI-generated content (like Google DeepMind's SynthID) that identify it as synthetic even after modification. Verification networks: Organizations like Bellingcat, First Draft, and AFP Fact Check use open-source intelligence to verify or debunk viral content.
Digital identity: Systems verifying that online accounts represent real people, reducing the effectiveness of bot and persona networks.
