Alliances and Blocs
NATO, BRICS, QUAD, G7, G20.
States form alliances to increase their security and influence. In an anarchic system with no world police, alliances are the primary way states protect themselves from threats.
Major Alliances and Groupings
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
- Founded: 1949 | Members: 32 (after Finland 2023, Sweden 2024)
- Core principle: Article 5 — an attack on one is an attack on all
- Only invoked once: after 9/11
- The most powerful military alliance in history
BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa + new members)
- Expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia
- Not a formal alliance — more of an economic/political coordination bloc
- Represents roughly 45% of the world's population
- Seen as a counterweight to Western-dominated institutions
The Quad (US, Japan, India, Australia)
- Informal strategic dialogue focused on the Indo-Pacific
- Widely seen as a response to China's growing influence
- Focuses on maritime security, technology, supply chains
