AI Watermarking and Provenance: The C2PA Standard
How content provenance systems like C2PA work to verify the origin of digital media, and why watermarking is the most promising defense against synthetic content.
The Provenance Problem
As AI-generated content becomes indistinguishable from human-created content, detection approaches that analyze the content itself are losing the arms race. Every time detection tools learn to identify AI artifacts, the next generation of AI models eliminates those artifacts. The more promising approach is provenance — not asking 'was this made by AI?' but 'where did this come from and what happened to it along the way?'
Content provenance is like a chain of custody for digital media. Just as a court requires evidence to have a documented chain of custody proving it was not tampered with, a provenance system records who created a piece of content, when, with what tool, and what modifications were made. This information travels with the content so that anyone viewing it can verify its origin.
