AI and Journalism
How AI is transforming newsrooms — and threatening them.
AI in the Newsroom
AI is both a tool for and a threat to journalism. On the tool side, newsrooms use AI for automated reporting (earnings summaries, sports recaps), transcription, translation, data analysis, and investigative research. The Associated Press has used automated journalism for corporate earnings since 2014.
On the threat side, AI-generated articles now flood the internet, often containing plausible-sounding but fabricated information. AI chatbots serve as news intermediaries, summarizing articles without driving traffic (or revenue) to publishers. And generative AI trained on journalistic content raises intellectual property concerns — the New York Times sued OpenAI in 2023, arguing its models were trained on copyrighted reporting without permission.
