The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) is a nonprofit educational organization headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, that serves as the principal honor society and rulemaking body for secondary-school forensics in the United States. Founded in 1925 as the National Forensic League (NFL) by Bruno E. Jacob at Ripon College, it was renamed the National Speech & Debate Association in 2014 to reduce confusion with the National Football League and to better reflect its inclusion of speech events alongside debate.
The NSDA sanctions and provides rules, topics, and resources for a wide range of competitive events, including Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, World Schools Debate, and interpretation and speaking events such as Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation, and Humorous Interpretation. It publishes the monthly topic for Public Forum, the bimonthly Lincoln-Douglas resolution, and the annual Policy topic (the Policy topic is selected via a national vote coordinated with the National Federation of State High School Associations).
Member schools and students accrue NSDA points for competition and service, which qualify students for degrees ranging from Degree of Merit through Premier Distinction. The organization hosts the National Speech and Debate Tournament each June, one of the largest academic competitions in the world, drawing thousands of qualifiers from district tournaments across the country.
For Model UN delegates and IR students, the NSDA is relevant because its debate formats—especially Public Forum, Congressional Debate, and World Schools—train many of the argumentation, evidence-handling, and extemporaneous skills that transfer directly to committee work. NSDA-released topic analyses, evidence files, and curriculum materials are frequently used as starting points for researching foreign policy and international law questions. The association also operates Resources.SpeechAndDebate.org and the Rostrum magazine, which publish coaching guidance and topic literature.
Example
In June 2023, the NSDA held its National Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, drawing more than 6,000 student competitors from across the United States.
