Togo is a narrow West African state between Ghana and Benin, ruled by the Gnassingbe family for over five decades. President Faure Gnassingbe succeeded his father Eyadema in 2005 and has remained in power since, with constitutional changes extending his rule. A 2024 constitutional revision shifted to a parliamentary system, potentially allowing indefinite rule.

Despite governance concerns, Togo has positioned itself as a regional mediator and economic hub. The Port of Lome is the only deep-water port in West Africa and a key logistics center. Togo has also played an active mediation role in regional crises, including the political transitions in Guinea and Mali, and in the Sahelian security crisis.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Togo, position yourself as a mediator and pragmatist. Your country has credibility as a neutral facilitator in regional disputes -- use this to build bridges between opposing blocs. Leverage the Port of Lome to discuss maritime security, trade facilitation, and blue economy issues.

Ally with France, Ghana, and Benin as your immediate neighbors and partners. In ECOWAS, advocate for dialogue over sanctions when dealing with the Sahelian juntas. On governance, deflect criticism by emphasizing stability and economic development. Support African solutions to African problems and contribute constructively to peacekeeping and mediation discussions.

Foreign Policy

Togo pursues a pragmatic, multi-directional foreign policy. It maintains close ties with France while cultivating relationships with China, India, and the Gulf states. Lome has positioned itself as a neutral ground for regional mediation.

Togo is active in ECOWAS, though it has sometimes diverged from the bloc's hardline stance on the Sahelian juntas, preferring dialogue over sanctions. The country has sought to mediate between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States. Togo also contributes troops to UN peacekeeping missions.
