Kuwait is a wealthy oil state at the head of the Persian Gulf whose 1990 invasion by Iraq and subsequent liberation by a U.S.-led coalition defined post-Cold War international security norms. The crisis validated the UN collective security system and cemented Kuwait's strong ties with the United States and Western allies.

Kuwait possesses approximately 6% of global oil reserves and operates one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds (Kuwait Investment Authority). It has a semi-democratic system with an elected parliament that exercises real legislative power, making it somewhat distinctive among Gulf monarchies. Kuwait has traditionally played a mediating role in Gulf disputes.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Kuwait, position yourself as a mediator and humanitarian leader within the Gulf and Arab world. Emphasize multilateralism and the importance of the UN system -- Kuwait's liberation validated collective security.

Leverage your humanitarian aid record and sovereign wealth for diplomatic goodwill. On Gulf disputes, offer to mediate rather than take sides. Support Palestinian rights through the Arab Group. Highlight the lessons of the 1990 invasion to advocate for sovereignty and non-aggression norms. Coordinate with GCC partners while maintaining your independent mediating voice.

Foreign Policy

Kuwait's foreign policy emphasizes multilateralism, mediation, and humanitarian aid. It mediated the 2017 Gulf crisis between Qatar and the Saudi-led bloc. Kuwait is a major humanitarian donor and has hosted international pledging conferences for Syria, Iraq, and other crises. Its security policy relies on the U.S. alliance, with significant American military presence in-country. Kuwait maintains balanced relations within the GCC and avoids taking aggressive positions against Iran.
