Iran is a founding UN member and a major regional power in the Middle East, with a civilization stretching back millennia. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it has been governed as a theocratic republic under the Supreme Leader, combining elected institutions with clerical oversight. Iran's nuclear program has been the defining issue of its international relations, culminating in the 2015 JCPOA and its subsequent unraveling.

Iran wields significant regional influence through its network of allied militias and political movements across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon (Hezbollah), and Yemen (Houthis), collectively known as the 'Axis of Resistance.' It possesses vast oil and gas reserves but has been severely constrained by multilateral and unilateral sanctions. Iran is a key member of OPEC and has deepened ties with Russia and China.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Iran, champion sovereignty, non-interference, and resistance to Western unilateralism. Position yourself as a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement and an advocate for developing nations.

On nuclear issues, frame enrichment as a sovereign right under the NPT. On regional conflicts, emphasize stability and anti-terrorism while supporting allied groups indirectly. Coordinate with Russia and China on Security Council matters. Counter Saudi and Israeli narratives aggressively. Invoke the legacy of U.S. interventionism (1953 coup, sanctions) to build sympathy among Global South delegations.

Foreign Policy

Iran's foreign policy is built on resistance to Western hegemony, opposition to Israel, and the projection of Shia influence across the region. It seeks to balance sanctions pressure by cultivating strategic partnerships with Russia and China, including joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS. The nuclear file remains central -- Iran seeks sanctions relief while preserving its enrichment capabilities. Iran also emphasizes South-South solidarity and anti-interventionism at the UN.
