Honduras is a founding UN member situated at the heart of Central America. It is one of the hemisphere's poorest countries and part of the Northern Triangle (with Guatemala and El Salvador), a region marked by high emigration, gang violence, and climate vulnerability.

Honduras is extremely susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms -- Hurricanes Eta and Iota in 2020 devastated the country. This climate vulnerability makes Honduras an important voice on climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and loss-and-damage financing in UN forums.

MUN Delegate Guide

As Honduras, focus on the interconnected challenges of poverty, migration, climate vulnerability, and security. Frame these as systemic issues requiring international solidarity and development financing, not just domestic governance problems.

Coordinate with Northern Triangle partners and the broader SICA bloc. Honduras's recent switch to recognising China opens new diplomatic avenues but may complicate relations with Taiwan-aligned states and some US interests.

Climate adaptation and disaster preparedness are your strongest platforms -- use the devastation of Hurricanes Eta and Iota to advocate for loss-and-damage funding and climate finance for vulnerable nations.

Foreign Policy

Honduras traditionally maintained close ties with the United States and recognised Taiwan diplomatically. However, in 2023 Honduras switched recognition from Taiwan to China, seeking greater economic engagement and infrastructure investment.

Foreign policy priorities include economic development, migration management, climate resilience, and Central American integration through SICA. Honduras participates in CAFTA-DR and has sought international support for addressing root causes of migration.
