Guatemala is Central America's most populous country and largest economy. A founding UN member, it has a complex history shaped by a 36-year civil war (1960-1996) that ended with UN-mediated peace accords. The country has a large indigenous Maya population, making indigenous rights a key issue.
Guatemala maintains a territorial claim over Belize, which has been referred to the International Court of Justice. The country has been a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping operations, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti.

As Guatemala, you represent Central America's largest nation with a complex legacy. Your civil war peace process (brokered by the UN) gives you credibility on peacebuilding and transitional justice. Champion indigenous rights -- Guatemala has one of the hemisphere's largest indigenous populations.
Coordinate with the Northern Triangle (Honduras, El Salvador) on migration and security issues. The Belize territorial dispute is sensitive -- handle it carefully and emphasise your commitment to ICJ adjudication.
Guatemala's Taiwan recognition is a distinctive position. Use it strategically but be aware it limits engagement with China. Focus on development, food security, and disaster preparedness as priorities that unite your coalition.
Foreign Policy
Guatemala's foreign policy focuses on economic development, migration (with a large diaspora in the US), Central American integration through SICA, and trade liberalisation under CAFTA-DR. Guatemala is one of a diminishing number of states recognising Taiwan, which influences its relationship with China.
The country seeks to balance US economic dependence with regional solidarity and has prioritised food security, anti-narcotics cooperation, and addressing root causes of migration in international forums.
