Guinea was the first French colony in Africa to vote for independence in 1958, rejecting Charles de Gaulle's proposed French Community. The country possesses an estimated one-third of the world's bauxite reserves -- the primary ore for aluminum -- making mining central to its economy and geopolitics.
A military coup in September 2021 overthrew President Alpha Conde, and the ruling junta under Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has faced ECOWAS sanctions and pressure to restore civilian rule. Guinea's mineral wealth attracts major investment from China, Russia, and Western mining companies, giving the junta economic leverage despite its political isolation.

As Guinea, emphasize your country's proud independence history -- you were the first Francophone African state to reject colonial dependency. Advocate for resource sovereignty and the right of African nations to manage their own mineral wealth.
On governance, acknowledge the transition but push back against external conditionality. Ally with fellow Francophone African states and build ties with China and Russia as development partners. On trade, advocate for beneficiation -- processing raw materials in Africa rather than exporting them unrefined. Support Mano River Union cooperation with Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Foreign Policy
Guinea's junta has sought to maintain its mining partnerships while resisting external pressure for a rapid democratic transition. China is Guinea's largest investor, primarily in the massive Simandou iron ore project, one of the world's largest untapped deposits.
Historically, Guinea maintained close ties with the Soviet Union during the Cold War and has preserved a tradition of non-alignment. The country's Mano River Union membership links it to Liberia and Sierra Leone on regional security.
