Bilateral posture, key relationships, and live diplomatic statements.

Foreign Policy

Gabon's foreign policy has traditionally been closely tied to France through the Francafrique network, with the Bongo family maintaining intimate personal and financial relationships with French political elites. The military transition government has signaled a desire to diversify partnerships while maintaining the French connection. China is a growing economic partner, particularly in timber and mining.

Gabon has served twice as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2010-2011, 2022-2023) and has used those platforms to champion environmental issues, particularly Congo Basin rainforest protection and the blue economy. The country leverages its massive carbon sinks and biodiversity as diplomatic assets in climate negotiations, positioning itself as a responsible forest steward deserving of climate financing.

MUN Delegate Guide

Gabon is an excellent delegation for environmental and climate committees. With 88% forest cover and ambitious national park programs, Gabon can lead on conservation financing, REDD+ mechanisms, carbon markets, and the value of standing forests. Use the country's recent Security Council experience to speak with authority on multilateral processes.

On energy, Gabon is an OPEC member that can address the tension between fossil fuel dependence and environmental stewardship. Advocate for just energy transitions that account for developing countries' need for revenue diversification.

Align with the African Group, CEMAC, OPEC, and the Francophonie. Key allies include France, China, Cameroon, and Congo (Republic). Gabon generally follows the African consensus on major votes. The military transition is a sensitive topic -- if raised, frame it as a corrective intervention with a clear roadmap to democratic elections. Build environmental coalitions with Congo-Brazzaville, Indonesia, and Brazil (other major tropical forest nations).
