Foreign Policy

Eritrea's foreign policy is defined by self-reliance, suspicion of multilateral institutions, and a determination to resist external pressure. The government views Western human rights advocacy as interference and has clashed repeatedly with the UN Human Rights Council. Eritrea is one of the few African states to maintain close ties with both Russia and China, and has cultivated relationships with Gulf states, particularly the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have used Eritrean territory for military operations in Yemen.

Regionally, Eritrea's relationships are volatile. The 2018 peace deal with Ethiopia was hailed as transformative but was followed by joint military operations in Tigray that drew sanctions threats. Relations with Djibouti remain tense over a border dispute, and Eritrea has been accused by the UN Monitoring Group of supporting armed groups in Somalia, though it disputes these allegations.

MUN Delegate Guide

Representing Eritrea in Model UN requires a strong command of sovereignty-focused rhetoric. Eritrea is one of the most independent-minded delegations at the UN, consistently voting against Western-backed resolutions and opposing what it frames as neo-colonial interference. Emphasize national sovereignty, non-interference, self-determination, and the right of nations to chart their own development path.

Eritrea is not easily classified into traditional bloc alignments. While part of the African Group and G-77, it frequently charts its own course. It votes with Russia and China on most General Assembly resolutions related to sovereignty and human rights. On Middle Eastern issues, Eritrea has shifted toward Gulf state positions.

Be prepared for challenges on human rights, indefinite national service, and press freedom. Respond by citing Eritrea's security environment and the unimplemented Algiers Agreement boundary ruling. Potential allies on sovereignty issues include Russia, China, Syria, and North Korea. Avoid conciliatory language on human rights monitoring -- Eritrea views UN commissions of inquiry as politically motivated.
