Foreign Policy
Ecuador's foreign policy has shifted significantly between left-leaning (Correa era, 2007-2017) and more centrist/right-leaning administrations. Under Correa, Ecuador was closely aligned with ALBA, expelled the US military base at Manta, and championed 'Citizens' Revolution' diplomacy. Subsequent governments have re-engaged with the US and pursued free trade agreements.
Ecuador is a member of OPEC and uses its oil leverage in economic diplomacy. Its constitutional rights for nature and the Yasuni referendum have made it a reference point in global environmental governance debates.
MUN Delegate Guide
As Ecuador, your constitutional rights for nature are your most distinctive diplomatic asset. Use them to lead on environmental governance, biodiversity, and the intersection of indigenous rights and environmental protection.
The Galapagos Islands give you a globally recognised platform on marine conservation and UNESCO World Heritage protection. Coordinate with Andean Community partners (Bolivia, Colombia, Peru) on regional issues.
Ecuador's OPEC membership allows you to engage in energy politics, but balance this with your environmental credentials. The Yasuni referendum -- where citizens voted to keep oil in the ground -- is a powerful example of democratic environmental governance. Use it in climate negotiations.
Be aware that Ecuador's security situation has deteriorated, making narcotics and transnational crime relevant issues for your delegation.
