Foreign Policy

Comoros pursues a foreign policy centered on the sovereignty claim over Mayotte and maintaining relationships with both Arab and African blocs. The country has strong ties to France despite the Mayotte dispute, and also maintains close relations with the Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which provide significant development aid.

Comoros leverages its dual membership in the African Union and the Arab League to build coalitions on issues of sovereignty and decolonization. The government has also cultivated economic ties with China and India as part of broader South-South engagement.

MUN Delegate Guide

As a Comoros delegate, the Mayotte issue is your signature cause -- raise it in any decolonization or territorial integrity debate. Frame it as an unresolved colonial question and cite UN General Assembly resolutions supporting Comorian sovereignty over all four islands. This issue earns you credibility in the African and Non-Aligned Movement blocs.

Align with the African Group, the Arab Group, and the OIC. Comoros is well-positioned to speak on small island developing states (SIDS) issues including climate change, sea-level rise, and the blue economy. You can also engage on Islamic solidarity topics and South-South cooperation.

Build alliances with Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles on Indian Ocean issues. On broader votes, Comoros generally follows the African Group consensus. Avoid being too confrontational with France in contexts where it might alienate Francophone allies.
