Foreign policy

Bilateral posture, key relationships, and live diplomatic statements.

Foreign Policy

Burundi's foreign policy centers on regional stability in the Great Lakes region and maintaining sovereignty against external interference. The government has resisted international oversight of its human rights record, withdrawing from the International Criminal Court in 2017. Burundi maintains close ties with Tanzania, China, and Russia, while relations with the EU and Western donors have been strained since 2015.

Regionally, Burundi participates in the EAC and has contributed significantly to AMISOM/ATMIS peacekeeping in Somalia, which provides both diplomatic capital and revenue. Relations with Rwanda remain complicated by historical ethnic dynamics and mutual accusations of destabilization.

MUN Delegate Guide

As a Burundi delegate, emphasize national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and South-South cooperation. Burundi is vocal about opposing externally imposed solutions to African conflicts and champions the principle that African problems require African solutions. Align closely with the African Group and the G-77.

In committee, focus on development issues, peacekeeping contributions, and climate resilience for landlocked developing countries. Burundi can credibly speak on post-conflict reconstruction, transitional justice, and the challenges of small agrarian economies. Avoid being drawn into debates on domestic human rights unless you can frame the discussion around sovereignty.

Natural allies include Tanzania, DR Congo, and other Great Lakes states. Burundi tends to side with China and Russia on sovereignty-related votes in the General Assembly. Be cautious around Rwanda-related topics given the complex bilateral relationship.
