## Why it matters

Central Europe, a region often characterized by its complex geopolitical history and diverse cultural landscapes, holds a pivotal position in understanding broader European and global dynamics. The convention's focus on this area allows for a deeper exploration of historical processes that have shaped modern nation-states and international relations. Discussions at this event contribute to a nuanced understanding of historical memory, identity formation, and the enduring impact of past events on current affairs.

From a diplomatic perspective, understanding the historical trajectories of Central European nations is essential for effective engagement. The region has been a crossroads of empires and ideologies, influencing major power shifts and conflicts. Insights gained from such historical conventions can inform contemporary policy-making, particularly concerning regional stability, economic cooperation, and cultural diplomacy. The event's location in Vienna, AUT, a city with a rich imperial past and a modern role as a diplomatic hub, further underscores its relevance.

## How to prepare

For those preparing to engage with Central European history, a thorough understanding of the region's multifaceted past is paramount. This includes not only major political and military events but also social, economic, and cultural developments. Utilizing frameworks such as "what-is-stakeholder-mapping" can help in identifying key historical actors and their motivations, while "dynamic-analysis" can aid in understanding the evolving nature of historical processes.

Furthermore, considering "gender-dynamics-across-cultures" within historical contexts can provide a more comprehensive view of societal structures and power relations. For participants, preparing to engage with diverse perspectives is key. This involves not only presenting one's own research but also actively listening and responding to the arguments of others, fostering a collaborative academic environment. The convention offers an opportunity to refine "engagement-strategies" with historical data and scholarly discourse.

### The Shaping of Central Europe: Borders, Nations, and Empires

Central Europe — the belt of lands between the Baltic, the Adriatic, and the Black Sea — has been defined by overlapping empires, shifting borders, and contested national identities. From the medieval Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through the long dominance of the Habsburg, Hohenzollern, Romanov, and Ottoman dynasties, the region's political map has been redrawn repeatedly. The partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, the revolutions of 1848, and the unifications of Germany and Italy fundamentally reshaped sovereignty across the area. The collapse of four empires after the First World War produced a new system of nation-states under the Versailles, Saint-Germain, and Trianon treaties, but these arrangements were destabilized by ethnic minorities, economic crises, and revisionist powers. The Second World War and the subsequent Soviet domination froze the region behind the Iron Curtain until 1989. Post-1989 transitions brought democratization, EU and NATO enlargement, and the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia alongside the violent breakup of Yugoslavia. Today Central Europe remains a zone where questions of historical memory, minority rights, and great-power influence — sharpened by Russia's war in Ukraine — continue to shape policy debates over identity, security, and integration with the West.

### The Medieval World: Christendom, Empire, and Frontier

The Middle Ages, conventionally dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 to the late 15th century, were marked in Europe by the fusion of Roman, Christian, and Germanic traditions. Charlemagne's coronation in 800 revived the idea of a Western Empire, while the Great Schism of 1054 divided Latin and Orthodox Christianity. Feudal structures, the rise of towns, the founding of universities, and the consolidation of monarchies in France, England, and the Iberian kingdoms reshaped political life, while the Holy Roman Empire dominated Central Europe in fragmented form. The Crusades (1095-1291) projected Latin Christendom into the Levant and intensified contact — both violent and commercial — with the Byzantine and Islamic worlds. In Central and Eastern Europe, the Christianization of Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, and Kievan Rus' integrated new polities into either the Latin or Orthodox sphere, while the Mongol invasions of the 13th century devastated Rus' and reached into Hungary and Poland. The Black Death of 1347-1351 killed perhaps a third of Europe's population and accelerated social and economic change. The period closed with the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the completion of the Reconquista in 1492, and the early stirrings of Renaissance humanism and Atlantic exploration — developments that historians traditionally use to mark the transition to the early modern era.

### The Second World War: Origins, Conduct, and Settlement

The Second World War (1939-1945) emerged from the unresolved tensions of the First World War, the punitive Versailles settlement, the Great Depression, and the rise of expansionist fascist and militarist regimes in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Nazi Germany's remilitarization of the Rhineland, annexation of Austria, dismemberment of Czechoslovakia under the 1938 Munich Agreement, and the August 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with the Soviet Union set the stage for the invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. Japan's war in China, ongoing since 1937, and its 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor merged the European and Asian conflicts into a single global war. The war became the deadliest in human history, killing an estimated 70-85 million people. It included the Holocaust, in which roughly six million Jews and millions of Roma, Slavs, disabled people, and political prisoners were murdered by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. The Eastern Front saw the largest land campaigns ever fought; the Pacific theater culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Germany surrendered in May 1945 and Japan in September. The postwar settlement produced the United Nations, the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals, the partition of Germany, the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, decolonization pressures, and the bipolar Cold War order. Its legal, moral, and territorial legacies — from the Genocide Convention to contested borders and memory politics — continue to shape international affairs.

### The Habsburg Empire: Dynasty, Multinationalism, and Collapse

The House of Habsburg rose from a modest Swiss-Alemannic lineage to become Europe's most enduring ruling dynasty. From the late 13th century the Habsburgs held the Austrian lands, and from 1438 they monopolized the elective imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire almost without interruption until 1806. Through the marriages of Maximilian I and the inheritances of Charles V in the early 16th century, Habsburg domains briefly spanned Spain, the Low Countries, much of Italy, the Americas, and Central Europe, before splitting into Spanish and Austrian branches in 1556. The Austrian Habsburgs consolidated a composite monarchy centered on Vienna, fighting the Ottomans for control of Hungary, leading the Catholic side in the Thirty Years' War, and reorganizing under Maria Theresa and Joseph II in the 18th century. After Napoleon's victories ended the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Francis II reconstituted his realms as the Austrian Empire, which became the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in the 1867 Compromise. The empire ruled a remarkable mosaic of Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Ruthenians, Romanians, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Italians. Defeat in the First World War triggered the empire's dissolution in 1918, formalized by the treaties of Saint-Germain and Trianon. Its successor states — Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and parts of Poland, Romania, and Italy — inherited both its administrative legacies and its unresolved national questions, debates that continue to inform Central European politics and historiography.

### The Ottoman Empire: Rise, Reform, and Dissolution

Founded around 1299 by Osman I in northwestern Anatolia, the Ottoman beylik expanded across the Balkans and Anatolia in the 14th and 15th centuries. Mehmed II's capture of Constantinople in 1453 ended the Byzantine Empire and made the city the Ottoman capital. Under Selim I and Süleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century, the empire absorbed the Mamluk lands, the Hejaz with the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and much of Hungary, becoming a Mediterranean and Indian Ocean power and the leading Sunni Muslim state. From the late 17th century — symbolically marked by the failed 1683 siege of Vienna and the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz — the empire faced sustained territorial losses to the Habsburgs and Russia, and growing internal challenges. The 19th-century Tanzimat reforms attempted to modernize administration, law, and the military, while nationalist movements in the Balkans, often backed by the Great Powers in the 'Eastern Question,' produced independent Greek, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, and Albanian states. The Young Turk revolution of 1908 sought constitutional renewal but could not halt decline. Defeat in the First World War alongside the Central Powers led to occupation, the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, and Turkish national resistance under Mustafa Kemal. The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and the abolition of the sultanate and caliphate in 1922-1924 ended the empire and established the Republic of Turkey. The empire's legacies — borders drawn by post-war mandates, contested memories including the Armenian Genocide, and confessional balances in the Levant and Balkans — remain politically charged.
